Starbucks apply to trademark the term “Fizzio”
Starbucks, the Seattle-based coffee company has filed a trademark application for the term “Fizzio” as it continues to test carbonated drinks.
The company says in the filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that the trademark would be for beverages making machines, as well as for a variety of drinks, including carbonated soft drinks.
A spokesman for Starbucks Corp., Zack Hutson said on Wednesday that the filing for the name “Fizzio” is related to the company’s test of sodas in done at Atlanta and Austin, which started in June. The company has been testing three flavors — lemon ale, ginger ale and root beer at the above locations. It is also providing the customers with the option to carbonate other drinks, such as iced tea.
Mr. Hutson also said that the response from customers in the test markets has been positive so far.
These tests on soda marks the latest move by Starbucks to expand beyond coffee. The company has recently acquired a chain of tea shops called Teavana and also looking to move into the fast-growing premium juice category with its Evolution Fresh juices.
Starbucks has more than 19,000 locations around the world, with about 12,000 of them in the U.S.
