What is claiming priority?
Article 4 of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property allows the owner of a filed trademark to subsequently file trademark applications in any of the Convention’s signatory countries if you file the subsequent applications within six months of your original registration for trademark. This provision by Article 4 of the Paris Convention is called ‘claiming priority’.
This means that if you apply for a mark in Japan, and five months later you want to apply for a mark in France, you can do so by using the effective date of your Japanese application.
