In Japan, can trademarks be registered for retail services?
Yes, trademarks can be registered in Japan for both retail and wholesale services, and in such case each kind of products are admitted as registrable services. Starting from April 1, 2007, it is possible to register trademark for designating retail service for consumers.
When filing an application for a trademark covering retail service, the applicant must designate the service related to retail sales in Class 35. However, evidence will be required by the Trademark Office may require evidences that the applicant actually provide such services.
