In Japan, can sounds, smells, and position marks be registered as trademarks?
Sound, smell, and position are examples of non-conventional trademarks that have become increasingly popular and widely acceptable in many countries in the recent years.
As of now, sounds, smells, and position marks cannot be registered as trademarks in Japan, but the Japanese Patent Office is considering of increasing the range of registerable trademarks to include sounds and position marks. Therefore, there is likely a chance that they will be registerable in the future.
