‘Budweiser’ trademark in Portugal acquired by Czech brewer
According to the Czech brewery Budvar, a Portuguese trade court has cancelled the rights owned by its rival Anheuser-Busch InBev, and has ruled in its favour that it will have the privileged rights to the Budweiser trademark in Portugal.
A legal battle has been ongoing over the use of the name Budweiser, for more a century by the State-owned Budejovicky Budvar NP and Anheuser-Busch. The legal fight continued even after Anheuser-Busch was brought over by Belgium’s InBev in the year 2008 in order to create the world’s largest brewer.
Budvar said in a statement released on Wednesday that AB InBev was prohibited by the Lisbon court from selling beer or similar products under the ‘Budweiser’ trademark. They also claim that the court gave Budvar the exclusive right to the name ‘Budweiser’ in Portugal.
Karen Couck, the spokeswoman for AB InBev stated in an email that the judgement by the court has not in any way affected the sales of its beer “under the established Bud brand in Portugal.”
